When SugarSMAC® Head Educator, Billie Jo started sugaring over 20 years ago, she had just gotten divorced. A baby on her hip. No backup plan. She took out a $3,000 loan to pay for training because she had no other option.
And to be honest? She sucked. Like… bad. Worst student in the room.
But she practiced. Over and over, night after night, with formula to buy and no other option. And about six months in—something clicked.
Today, she’s runs your own multi-location sugaring business The Sugar Shop, and one of the most respected sugarists in the industry, placing at the Atlanta Skin Games as one of the top Brazilian sugarists in the world.

Is this course beginner-friendly?
Absolutely. No previous experience needed. We walk you through theory, technique, client prep, safety, and even troubleshooting—step by step.
How long does the course take?
It’s self-paced, but most students complete the online training + live assessment within 2–4 weeks depending on how much time they dedicate to practice. There's no deadline—we're not going anywhere.
What’s included in the live training and skills assessment?
You’ll book a 1-hour one-on-one session (via Zoom or in person) with one of our certified pros. You’ll demonstrate your moulds and flicks (Sugarist Technique - don't worry - it's all explained in the course with videos!). You'll have a chance to ask questions, and get real-time feedback.
What’s required to pass?
You’ll complete the theory units with quizzes. There is a full exam on theory and process knowledge at the end of the Online course portion. Then you will book your live skill assessment. If your technique is safe, effective, and client-ready, you’ll be certified!
Do I need a license to start working as a sugarist?
It depends on your location. Some areas require an esthetics or cosmetology license, others don’t. We recommend checking your local regulations before booking clients.
Is there community support?
Yes! Once enrolled, you’ll get access to The Sweet Talk Society—a forum for sugarists to ask questions, troubleshoot, and grow their businesses together. You’ll also receive a badge when certified! We're in the forum daily answering questions along with our educators and sugarists so if you have any questions we will be sure to answer with all our years of knowledge behind us!
Will I be able to buy more product after I’m certified?
Absolutely. Certification unlocks your professional access to SugarSMAC®, one of the most trusted pastes in the industry. And, unlike other programs we don't lock you in to any contracts to continue with SugarSMAC® products in your practice. What if I don’t pass the first time?
No stress—we’re not here to fail you. We’ll give you clear feedback and support so you can practice and try again. We may charge a minimal fee for our time to cover our costs to have the instructor guide you more in depth. But we are not here to gouge, just to support you until you've got it. We also want to ensure that our certifications continue to be well respected in the industry so we won't pass you unless we have confidence you have a good handle on the required skillset.
Do I have to take clients right away?
Nope—and most people don’t. After certification, most students take time to keep practicing, build confidence, and get comfortable before seeing paying clients. That’s totally normal (and smart). This journey is flexible for a reason—start when you feel ready.
